Proclamation of Spitzkoppe 22 Oct 2010

The National Heritage Council of Namibia has recommended the proclamation of Spitzkoppe as a Section 54 Conservation Area.
Only a small area of the Spitzkoppe, known as the Bushman Paradise Cave, currently enjoys the protection of a national monument.
The Bushman Paradise Cave which lies at the southeastern end of the Pondok Mountains was proclaimed a national monument in July 1954.

The proclamation of a Section 54 Conservation Area will provide protection to numerous other rock paintings and other cultural resources in the larger Spitzkoppe area.
Also known as the Matterhorn of Namibia, the Spitzkoppe is a well-known landmark which rises 670 m above the plains northeast of Usakos. It is also popular with mountaineers and one of the best places in the country to see the endemic Herero chat.
Submissions and requests for hearings by members of the public must be submitted to the National Heritage Council of Namibia before Monday, 29 November.
Enquiries can be made with Ms Erica M P Ndalikokule at Tel +264 61 244375, Cell +264 81 128-0874, Fax +264 88 636298, Email: erica@nhc-nam.org
