This will be in the form of a central repository managed by the National Heritage Council of Namibia (NHC).The register is to be established in terms of the National Heritage Act of 2004, through which the NHC was also created.

A one-day workshop on the process of developing the register was held in Windhoek on Wednesday. NHC Director Karl Aribeb gave a presentation on the legal provisions relating to the creation of the register.

The workshop was aimed at consulting with people involved in heritage issues on their expectations, concerns and needs, to seek classification of heritage sources for registration and to hear from representatives from neighbouring countries that have already established national inventories, such as South Africa and Zambia.

The chairperson of the NHC, Ellen Namhila, who opened the workshop, said the gathering represented the first step in the process of working out the details of the register.
