SiteComments:
Simple pile of natural stones with a bronze panel on top and an emblem on the bottom. J. Afrikaner was the Kaptein of the Oorlam people such as his father was, from 1823 until his death. He brought the Nama and Oorlam to join forces in a state-like power structure. In 1835 he defeated the Herero and a hegemony of his leadership in southern and central Namibia was established, with flourishing Windhoek as its headquarter since 1840. He was the awarding authority for the contsruction of the roads to the Cape and Walvis Bay. From 1860 on European competition and discontentment amongst his followers grew. His dependency on trade from the cape and the depletion of resources, drove him to extend his realm of domination to the north, on the way he contracted an inflammation which caused his death on 18/08/1861, he was buried at okahandja.
