SiteComments:
Structure of twenty metres high, similar to the Bismarck Tower in Germany, a wooden staircase leads to its top to a platform where a metel share was mounted to light a fire. Two sloped flanking walls added in 1913 because the tower resembled a lime-kiln. Two bronze plaques on both sides of the entrance: "Zur Erinnerung an die Belagerung von Omaruru durch die Ovaherero vom 17.1. bis 4.2.1904 und an den Entsatz durch das Gefecht vom 4.2.1904 errichtet." The other plaque carries the names of those Germans who died in or after the battle. Krupp-cannon in the front of the tower, dated 1874, gun carriage 1879. On 4 February 1904 Captain Victor Franke and 100 of his men broke the siege of Omaruru by 3,000 Herero during their rebellion after a march from Gibeon that took them 19 days. They had 4 field cannons. 100 Hereros and 7 Germans fell. The Herero fled after they were driven out of their rock shelters. After an idea by Rudolf Kindt, the Tower was erected in 1908 by Mr Hagendorn. In April 1906 a funraising dinner was held, the community contributed and the grounds were donated by the german colonial administration. A commemorative service was held on 4 February every year.
